The Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development Project in Egypt

The Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development Project in Egypt operates under a partnership agreement between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the United Nations Development Program, and aims to support and enhance social and economic development and empower local communities using ICT tools, through implementing partnerships with various institutions, which reflects on the competitive skills and capabilities of individuals in the information society and allows them to be effectively involved to contribute to the development process.

In this, the project is consistent with Egypt's Sustainable Development Strategy, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework, while at the same time relying on the new benefits obtained from emerging opportunities in the field of using ICT to achieve sustainable development.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. The Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development Project in Egypt includes three integrated entities:

  • Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development Project in Egypt.
  • E-Learning Competitiveness Center.
  • Digital Sustainability Centers.
Implemented by the Central Administration for Digital Community Development at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

The project strategy is based on five integrated axes, which are:

  • Economic growth: by accelerating economic growth by increasing employment opportunities and encouraging social innovation.
  • Social development: by enhancing social development to empower citizens, especially the poorest and least fortunate groups.
  • Sustainable environment: by preserving the environment through managing natural resources and optimal use of sustainable consumption patterns.
  • South-South cooperation: by establishing a framework for effective partnerships and cooperation between countries of the South.
  • Capacity development: by enhancing the skills of the Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development Project ambassadors who support the achievement of the sustainable development goals in Egypt in a better way.

Inclusion and empowerment: The project accommodates up to 50% of participants and beneficiaries of its various initiatives who represent women, persons with disabilities, youth and adolescents, including residents of informal settlements, rural and remote areas.

The project also directly contributes to the implementation of the following local sustainable development goals:

  • By 2030, the Egyptian economy will be a disciplined, knowledge-based economy, characterized by competitiveness and diversity, and characterized by a favorable macroeconomic environment, capable of achieving comprehensive sustainable growth, and an effective player in the global economy, capable of adapting to global changes, maximizing added value, and providing decent and productive job opportunities, and bringing the per capita share of the real gross domestic product to the ranks of middle and high-income countries.
  • All Egyptians will enjoy a healthy, safe life through the implementation of an integrated health system characterized by availability, quality, and non-discrimination, and capable of improving health indicators through rapid intervention and preventive coverage.
  • High-quality education will be available to all, without discrimination, within the framework of an efficient, fair, and flexible institutional system that provides the necessary skills for students and trainees to think innovatively, and empowers them technically and technologically, and contributes to building a self-respecting, creative, responsible citizen who is able to deal competitively, accepts diversity and difference, and is proud of his country's history.

Maximizing the contribution of ICT to development to build the human being, and enhancing the digital economy to achieve sustainable development and improve the living conditions of citizens.

Principles of work:

  • Harnessing ICT
    The project supports paving the way towards an inclusive information society, including an enabling environment for information technology, to support the achievement of local sustainable development goals.
  • Meeting community needs:
    The program meets the changing social needs of different local communities, especially in remote and border areas.
  • Innovation:
    The project links applied ICT sciences with social sciences, taking into account innovative features in all aspects.
  • Accountability and transparency:
    Accountability activities and transparent information will be systematically available, through the establishment of knowledge networks between the public and private sectors and civil partners.
  • Partnerships:
    Stakeholders are involved in all stages of implementation, especially at the strategic level, which leads to greater confidence in the objectives, effective implementation and desired sustainability.

The project also contributes to the outcomes of the United Nations Development Assistance Framework, as follows:

  • Inclusive growth, economic empowerment, and employment, so that Egypt takes paths towards fair sustainable development, and remains on track to achieve the agreed upon goals of comprehensive, sustainable, flexible, and job-generating economic development.
  • Women's full contribution to development in Egypt, and respecting, protecting, and activating all the rights of women and girls stipulated in the Constitution without any discrimination.
